# Backlink Analysis: Building a Stronger Link Profile

> How to audit your backlink profile, identify toxic links, analyse competitor link strategies, and build authority — with the checklist below.

## Short answer

Backlink analysis measures four things: how many distinct referring domains link to you, the topical relevance and quality of those domains, the anchor-text distribution, and which links were recently gained or lost. The count of referring domains matters far more than the raw number of links.

- **Primary metric**: Referring domains
- **Also measured**: Relevance · anchors · gained/lost

## Backlink Analysis: Building a Stronger Link Profile

Backlinks remain one of Google's strongest ranking signals. A single high-authority link from a relevant domain can move rankings more than dozens of on-page optimisations. But a toxic link profile can trigger manual penalties. Understanding what you have — and what you need — is essential.

## Auditing Your Existing Backlinks

Start with a full export of your backlink profile. For each link, assess:

- **Linking domain authority** — higher authority domains pass more equity
- **Relevance** — a link from a topically relevant site is worth more than an irrelevant high-authority site
- **Anchor text** — exact-match anchor text in excess signals over-optimisation; a natural profile has mostly branded and generic anchors
- **Link placement** — editorial links in body content outperform footer or sidebar links
- **Follow vs nofollow** — nofollow and UGC/sponsored links pass little equity, but context matters

## Identifying Toxic Links

Toxic links are those that could trigger a Google penalty. Warning signs:

- Links from pure link farms or private blog networks (PBNs)
- Sitewide links from low-quality directories
- Keyword-stuffed exact-match anchor text at scale
- Links from hacked or spam sites
- Sudden spikes in link acquisition with no clear cause

For confirmed toxic links, reach out to the linking site to request removal. For links that can't be removed, submit a disavow file to Google Search Console.

## Referring Domains vs Total Backlinks

Total backlink count is a vanity metric. What matters is **unique referring domains** — 100 links from 100 different domains is far more valuable than 100 links from the same domain. Track:

- Total referring domains
- New vs lost referring domains month-over-month
- Referring domain quality distribution

## Competitor Backlink Analysis

Your competitors' link profiles are your prospecting list. Analyse:

- Which sites link to competitors but not to you? (Link intersect analysis)
- What content earns the most links for competitors? (Linkable asset identification)
- Are competitors earning links through PR, directories, partnerships, or content?

Replicate what's working. If three competitors have links from the same industry directory, that directory is worth targeting.

## Anchor Text Distribution

A healthy anchor text profile looks roughly like:

| Anchor type | Approximate share |
|------------|-----------------|
| Branded (your name/domain) | 40–60% |
| Generic ("click here", "read more") | 15–25% |
| Partial match (contains keyword) | 10–20% |
| Exact match (your target keyword) | 1–5% |
| Naked URL | 5–15% |

Anything with heavy exact-match concentration is a red flag, both to Google and in your own analysis.

## Monitoring New and Lost Links

Link monitoring catches two critical events:

1. **New links** — confirm quality, track equity gains
2. **Lost links** — a 301 redirect changed, a page was deleted, or the site removed the link; reach out to recover valuable lost links

## Backlink Analysis Checklist

RankProof does not offer dedicated backlink tools today. Bring the signals covered above — referring-domain counts, anchor-text mix, toxic-link flags, and recently gained or lost links — together into one profile, and re-check it whenever your link footprint changes materially.
